An action movie with a good deal of winning humor, Shazam! opened this past weekend to a roaring welcome from audiences and also from critics. The story follows 14-year-old Billy Batson (Asher Angel), who discovers that he can transform into an adult superhero (Zachary Levi) simply by saying one word. First, he learns what powers he can wield as a superhero; then he must figure out how best to use those powers to help other people. Mark Strong also stars as a powerful and villainous figure.
Now that Shazam! has launched successful into theaters, what's next for DC Films? We take a closer look at three of their upcoming productions.
Joker
A gritty character study as well as a broader cautionary tale, Joker will plumb the depths of a man who has been disregarded by society. Joaquin Phoenix stars as The Joker; he's joined by Zazie Beetz (Deadpool 2), Frances Conroy, Brian Tyree Henry and Robert De Niro (The King of Comedy), all under the direction of Todd Phillips (The Hangover).
Joker is set for release on October 4. Read more about the movie here.
Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)
The overall critical reaction to Suicide Squad may have been mixed, but everyone agreed that Margot Robbie gave a standout performance as Harley Quinn. Next, the charming criminal will be showcased on the big screen in Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn).
Actress/producer Robbie says that the movie will not be "really serious" so the expanded title reflects that attitude. Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Ella Jay Basco, Renee Perez and Ewan McGregor will also star. Filming began earlier this year; it's scheduled for theatrical release on February 7, 2020. Read more about the movie here.
Wonder Woman 1984
In the face of a mighty foe, Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) demonstrated her courage and bravery during World War I. The sequel jumps ahead more than six decades as Diana Prince comes into conflict with the Soviet Union during the Cold War in the 1980s. Kristen Wiig will portray Barbara Ann Minerva, an archeologist who becomes the villainous Cheetah and opposes Wonder Woman.
Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) will also return, along with Connie Nielsen and Robin Wright. Patty Jenkins will once again direct. Wonder Woman 1984 is set for release on June 5, 2020. Read more about the film here.
