Thanks to the wonders of 3D and a fairly lackluster weekend at the box office, Resident Evil: Afterlife managed to cough up $27 million for first place. That's the best opening for any Resident Evil film, though those numbers are mainly due to higher 3D ticket prices. Considering it only grossed $4 million more in its opening than 2007's Resident Evil: Extinction, that's not saying a whole lot for 3D … even if this film's 3D was some of the best 2010 had to offer (but we'll talk about that in another post).
Regardless of what impact 3D did or did not have on the film's number one opening at the box office, it appears everyone wants to return for yet another installment in the franchise, with star Milla Jovovich already talking up the next sequel. Vulture caught up with the actress while she was hosting some shindig in New York City, and when asked to comment on the Afterlife's opening, she said, "This new Resident Evil is the first one to ever open at No. 1 worldwide. It's the biggest movie in the franchise. So we're definitely going to make another one." She later added that director Paul W.S. Anderson (who's also her husband in real life) is already cooking up a bunch of ideas by talking to fans through Twitter and Facebook, making it seem as if this next installment will take into account what fans of the franchise want to see most. Which is a good thing, right? I mean once you get to a part five, you may as well have some fun … right?
