The foundation for every great friendship is the memories that are shared, as Academy Award-winner H.E.R. puts it, “[Memories] are sort of a love language… Our memories make us who we are… It’s why Jo is afraid to lose her best friend: ‘How are we going to make more memories?’” This risk of losing your cherished memories is at the core of the new DreamWorks film Forgotten Island, which centers around best friends Jo and Raissa, voiced by H.E.R. and Liza Soberano, who are transported to a magical paradise. But the longer they stay on the island, the longer they risk forgetting each other forever.
H.E.R. and Soberano sat down with Seen on the Screen host Jacqueline Coley to talk about friendship and what they hope people take away from the film. “I hope [audiences] remember to hug their friends and realize how important friendship is,” H.E.R. explains. Soberano agrees, adding that she wants audiences to “reach out to their best friend and reconnect and cherish the art of memory making.”
Forgotten Island is also heavily inspired and steeped in Filipino culture, both in the creatures, design, and mythology of the movie, as well as in its themes of friendship, family, and connection. Soberano explains that “in Filipino culture, we have such an innate and natural ability to build found families anywhere we go in the world. Part of our culture is just so hospitable and welcoming. We’re really good at connecting with people.” H.E.R. shares the sentiment, adding, “Everybody’s your tita, everybody’s your pinsan… Everybody’s your family.”
