Sony shook up the superhero scene when it signed a deal with Disney to let Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the first time ever. But as with all good things, there was a catch. Sony wasn't giving all of Spider-Man's world over to the MCU. The studio still planned to keep much of it for itself.
Just last week the Sony folks revealed that Tom Hardy had been cast in a Venom movie to be directed by Ruben Fleisher, and now this week we've got news about Sony's other cornerstone of their non-MCU, non-Spider-Man Marvel universe. Gina Prince-Bythewood (pictured below) is set to direct the Silver Sable and Black Cat movie.
We already knew Sony was planning a movie based on the two iconic characters, but hiring the director of the terrific Love & Basketball is an exciting new development. Not only will Prince-Bythewood direct, but she'll be rewriting a script that's already been worked on by Chris Yost (Thor: Ragnarok) and Lisa Joy (Westworld).
In the comics, Silver Sable and Black Cat are two women who routinely operate on both sides of the law; Silver Sable as a mercenary and Black Cat as a burglar with good intentions. Neither of them have superpowers, but instead dedicated their lives to training in combat, weaponry and whatever else they felt necessary to seek justice on their terms. In the comics both characters have unique relationships with Spider-Man, but since he won't be in these movies, it's anyone's guess as to how the two will come together and who exactly they'll be fighting against.
The Silver Sable and Black Cat movie does not currently have a release date but is expected to be the second film in Sony's new universe. The first is Venom, which will hit theaters on October 5, 2018. That gives us plenty of time to hope that Prince-Bythewood can convince her Beyond the Lights star Gugu Mbatha-Raw to play either lead.
