Here we are again, talking about a Venom movie being put through the production wringer. Let's take a quick trip down memory lane…

It all began in a distant time known as the year 2000, or as folks around that time affectionately referred to as Y2K. New Line Cinema owned the rights to the Venom character and had plans to bring the character to the big screen, years before Sam Raimi's Spider-Man mega-franchise.

Fast forward to 2007, when Sony acquired the rights to the Venom character and featured him as one of the bad guys in the third Spider-Man movie. With the three Spider-Man films that grossing almost $2.5 billion worldwide, Sony had plans to spin-off the Venom character into his own film. However, the third movie was met with overall dislike from movie-goers and any Spider-Man related spin-offs or sequels were quickly shelved.

Once the dust had settled a bit, Sony decided to reboot the franchise, bringing us a new Spider-Man in Andrew Garfield and a storyline which takes place during a time before Venom was even introduced in the Spidey mythology.

But Venom won't go down easy. Sony is now in talks with Chronicle director Josh Trank to helm a spin-off movie. The logistics of how this movie would work are still up in the air, but given Trank's solid work on Chronicle, surely he can come up with a unique bend on Venom. Perhaps a Chronicle-esque story where the Symbiote bonds with a super-powered human? Surely Spider-Man would have to appear at some point or does a vigilante hero take on the masked villain. Maybe Vemon bonds with Eddie Brock or Mac Gargan instead? Perhaps Disney and Sony can make nice and have Venom be the baddie in Avengers 2… OK, maybe not.

Would you watch a Venom stand-alone movie?
