Last time I wrote about the re-release of Avatar in theaters later this summer, you all had plenty to say (at last count the post had 72 comments). I was sensing a mixed crowd – with some of you itching to see the film again in 3D up on the big screen (like me), and others not interested in what they consider to be a cash-grab attempt (ie: just a way for the studio to make even more money off the movie).

'Avatar'

For those out of the loop, James Cameron's Avatar will arrive back in theaters on August 27th for a limited run with 8 extra minutes of footage. Honestly – and I said this before – I don't even need the extra footage. I just want to see the thing again in 3D to remind myself that, yes, when done right, 3D could be awesome.

In order to build awareness and get people excited to pay again to see a film that's already on DVD, 20th Century Fox has released the first commercial advertising the event. Avatar fanatics will notice bits and pieces of new, never-before-seen footage sandwiched in between the familiar stuff, but don't expect it to blow you away or anything. It's more or less just an extension of other scenes; more stuff on Pandora, etc… Apparently Cameron's first cut of the film was something ridiculous like 6 hours long, so I'd expect more never-before-seen footage to, well, get seen within the next couple of years.

So whaddya think? You going back to see Avatar on August 27th?
