Who Will Win the Weekend? (8/28-8/31)

While last weekend's box office went to a bunch of Inglourious Basterds, this weekend is fun because it pits two scary flicks against one another. My friend (and horror aficionado) Scott Weinberg said yesterday that you know it's the end of summer when two horror sequels are going up against one another at the box office. But yet, in a summer that was fairly empty of scary movies, getting two in one weekend should satisfy your appetite for blood, guts and inventive character deaths. Let's take a look at what we've got heading our way (and don't worry, it's not all scary) …

 
What's the Scoop: Rob Zombie returns to the director's chair for this sequel to his 2007 re-imagining of the original 1978 John Carpenter film about a masked serial killer named Michael Myers who stalks and kills people on Halloween.
Why It Might Win the Weekend: The first installment in Zombie's new series surprised everyone when it took in $26 million on opening weekend (eventually pulling in $80 million worldwide), so we should expect a decent amount of folks to turn out for anything Michael Myers related.
 
What's the Scoop: The final installment in this series is heading to us in 3D, and will once again revolve around a group of teens who cheat death at a racetrack only to find that death catches up to them eventually (and in the most creative ways).
Why It Might Win the Weekend: These horror movies in 3D do pretty well with the teen audience…and only the teen audience. Will they be enough to carry it to a box office victory?
 
What's the Scoop: Director Ang Lee travels back to the summer of 1969 when one local kid (played by Demetri Martin) helped concert organizers stage one of the grandest and most iconic concerts in music history: Woodstock.
Why It Might Win the Weekend: The limited amount of theaters may hurt this film, along with the fact that the much-needed teen audience will be busy watching people die in other films. But, hey, you always have to root for an underdog.
 
Still in theaters is last week's winner, Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds, and after lots of good buzz I wouldn't expect those Basterds to give up the top spot so easily. My prediction for this week's winner is…The Final Destination.

    not one of these outdid inglorious. i think people will be mad they just didnt see it a second time instead of paying for one of the 3 opening pics
