"We should start with Halle [Bailey], because the reason I did the movie was Halle," Regé-Jean Page tells RT Awards Editor and Seen on the Screen podcast host Jacqueline Coley. "Halle has a certain disarming soft cuteness that we don't often get to see in Black relationships on screen, we don't get to see us have our cute little trip to Tuscany and our cute little love story, and being embraced by the world. [...] That's a movie I haven't seen."
Indeed we don't. It's not often we get a Love Jones, How Stella Got Her Groove Back, or Brown Sugar, but producer Will Packer (Girls Trip, Straight Outta Compton) hopes to change that with Halle Bailey and Page in the rom-com You, Me & Tuscany. The film follows Anna (Halle Bailey), who has a chance encounter with a handsome Italian man, Matteo (Lorenzo de Moor), and plans to crash at his Tuscany villa without his permission. But things become complicated when she sparks up a romance with Matteo's cousin, Michael (Regé-Jean Page), after telling Matteo's family that she's engaged to Matteo.
"I feel the same [as Regé-Jean Page]," Bailey added. "We had been put in these big roles and people see us as these Black leaders, where they find joy in the art that we're creating, and us being happy together and joyful. [...] It's a story of joy that doesn't have to be centered on struggle and drama."
Check out the full Seen on the Screen episode above, where Hailey and Page elaborate more on why they were interested in doing the film, their experience with Queen Latifah and Michael Fassbender, and rank their favorite rom-coms.
