While The Hobbit arrives in theaters this weekend, we'll have to wait and see how movie audiences react to the new 48 fps high-frame rate screenings. Meanwhile, it appears as though the format may be getting the Marvel touch in 2014.

Fox announced that X-Men: Days of Future Past will be released in 3D, though it's not clear if they will shoot in 3D or post-convert. The studio also recently confirmed that The Wolverine will be post-converted into 3D.

Director Bryan Singer recently tweeted that he experienced "serious frame rate envy" after a screening of The Hobbit. If the limited screens projecting The Hobbit in high-frame rate perform well, expect to see Fox try to use the format on some of their upcoming tentpole projects.

The high-frame rate format has pretty much garnered unfavorable opinions by turning the image projected on screen into that of a dreamy daytime soap opera. There's still two years before X-Men: Days of Future Past arrives on screen, leaving plenty of time to improve the technology.

While 3D was pretty much a given, would you be interested in seeing X-Men in high-frame rate?

X-Men: Days of Future Past opens July 18, 2014.
