The Lazarus Effect / Flatliners / Pet Sematary

The movies make it appear possible to bring the dead back to life, but once you do, what then? Reviving the dead always has consequences, usually quite terrifying, as explored in The Lazarus Effect. And, as past movies have highlighted, those terrors can take many forms.

Flatliners (1990)

Kiefer Sutherland, Julia Roberts, and Kevin Bacon star as medical students in this horror-thriller about the desire to learn what happens after death. Their experiments involve inducing a death-like state -- "flatlining" -- and then returning to life. They conduct the experiments upon themselves, and as this clip featuring Sutherland and Bacon shows, they desperately need each other in order to have any kind of success. Little do they realize the terror their experiments will yield.

Lord of Illusions (1995)

Clive Barker expanded his own short story into an extravagantly horrific tale of terror. The resurrection this time arises as an unexpected plot turn, so we won't ruin it any further, except to share this clip, which raises the question: What is real, and what is an illusion? By the end of the movie, everything is in doubt.

Pet Sematary (1989)

Aw, we love our pets, don't we? Even after they've died, we still miss them, and sometimes we even go the extra mile and give them a good burial. Unfortunately, sometimes they don't rest in peace, as this thriller demonstrates. Stephen King adapted his own bestselling novel for the big screen, and also played a small role as a minister.

Bride of Re-Animator (1989)

Herbert West (Jeffrey Combs) and Dan Cain (Bruce Abbott) survived the first movie and continued their resurrection experiments in the sequel, this time working to reanimate individual body parts. As this scene indicates, some of the reanimated humans are not very happy to see the doctors again.

Deadly Friend (1986)

It's not immediately apparent from the trailer, but Wes Craven's shocker deals extensively with a relationship between Paul (Matthew Laborteaux) and Samantha (Kristy Swanson), next-door neighbors who begin a romance that is interrupted by a tragedy. The tragedy is compounded when an attempt is made to bring someone back from the dead.
