Now that Andrew Garfield has been chosen to play Spider-Man in the Marc Webb-directed 2012 3D reboot, attention now turns to which actress will be chosen to play his love interest in the movie. In a not-so-surprising twist proving the studio may want to try to distance itself a little from the previous franchise for comparison's sake, this time around Mary Jane Watson will not be Peter Parker's main squeeze – at least not for the first installment. Nope, and it isn't clear either whether they will instead focus on the character Gwen Stacy (who did make an appearance in Spider-Man 3; Bryce Dallas Howard played her), or if they'll go all the way back and cast an actress to play another one of Parker's girlfriends, Betty Brant.
Meanwhile, while Spider-Man geeks engage in hardcore debates over which love interest is more appropriate for the reboot, a few actresses have been named as possible contenders. They are: Imogen Poots (Fright Night), Ophelia Lovibond (Nowhere Boy), Lilly Collins (The Blind Side), Teresa Palmer (The Sorcerer's Apprentice), Emma Roberts (Valentine's Day, Hotel for Dogs), and Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World), though the latter has apparently dropped out of the race, which is too bad because she kills it in Pilgrim.
Keep in mind they could add more to this list if none of these girls work out. Remember the circus surrounding the Spider-Man casting and all the different guys who tried out for that one? Exactly. In the meantime, though, let's have some fun and try to decide which one of these girls would be best alongside Spidey. My pick? I'm a little up in the air, to be honest, though I'm kinda leaning toward Lily Collins only because she has a bit of a quick-witted edge that I'd like to see more of.
