With Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice hitting theaters this week, Warner Bros. is taking the chance to throw us some goodies for its other upcoming superhero movies, including the first teaser for The Lego Batman Movie and now this new image from next year's solo Wonder Woman movie, starring Gal Gadot.
Gadot's too-cool-for-school approach to Diana Prince, aka Wonder Woman, is arguably one of the best parts of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. She's clearly a character who's been there and done that, and it's refreshing to see a female superhero lasso in to save the day for a change.
The image above (courtesy of EW) features four female Amazonian warriors of Themyscira, Wonder Woman's home. It's there that Diana stands alongside her mother, Queen Hippolyta (Connie Nielsen), and her aunts Antiope (Robin Wright) and Menalippe (Lisa Loven Kongsli).
Director Patty Jenkins explains to EW that the three women share different beliefs when it comes to raising Diana, the island's only child. Her mother wants to shelter her, while her aunt wants to prepare her for anything that might come her way. “She is the only child they raised together,” says Jenkins. “And their love for her manifests in a different way for each of them.”
You'll notice that two of the women in the image, including Diana, are wearing high heels, a detail many fans took Jurassic World to task when Bryce Dallas Howard's character ran around most of that film wearing heels. Jenkins, however, explains the heels is just "total wish fulfillment," adding, “I, as a woman, want Wonder Woman to be hot as hell, fight badass, and look great at the same time—the same way men want Superman to have huge pecs and an impracticably big body. That makes them feel like the hero they want to be. And my hero, in my head, has really long legs.”
Wonder Woman hits theaters on June 23, 2017, but you can get your first taste of Gadot as the character in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, in theaters now.
