One year ago, we heard that Marco Ramirez (TV's Daredevil) would be writing a new screenplay for Akira, based on a manga series about a biker gang and psychic powers. The series was first published in Japan and was adapted into a Japanese-language feature film in 1988. The project has been in development for years, with Leonardo DiCaprio attached as a producer.
A few months later, we heard a rumor that a trilogy of films would be produced and that filmmaker Christopher Nolan (Interstellar) was involved. Nolan has since moved on to make war movie Dunkirk, due out on July 19, 2017, but rumors persist about Akira. The latest report from Meet the Movie Press (via SlashFilm) claims that Warner Bros. wants Justin Lin to direct the project.
Lin is best known for directing four installments of the Fast and Furious series and we'll soon see what he's done with Star Trek Beyond, scheduled for theatrical release on July 22. He's certainly proven that he's more than capable of handling big-budget productions, so we'll wait to see if the rumor pans out and if he wants to take on this particular challenge.
Spider-Man: Homecoming is now in production, heading for release on July 7, 2017, and so it's perhaps inevitable that rumors would begin to circulate about the possibility of Spider-Man spin-off movies. While Marvel and Sony are partnering on the Spider-Man movies themselves, the spin-offs fall under the control of Sony alone.
A new rumor via CinemaBlend suggests that screenwriter Abi Morgan (The Iron Lady) has been courted to write a spin-off movie revolving around Silver Sable. The character has been described as "an extraordinary hand-to-hand combatant and martial artist, an expert marksman and swordsman, an accomplished gymnast and an accomplished leader and strategist."
That leaves a lot of possibilities for the character to star in her own movie. If the rumor is true, Morgan would be a great choice as a writer. We'll keep an eye out for any further news about Spider-Man spin-offs.
