Terminator Genisys

You've got to at least hand this much to the filmmakers of Terminator Genisys: when they plan to twist a franchise's mythology, they don't just tweak it here and there, they blow it to smithereens. At least it looks that way in the latest trailer, which further reveals what's really going on in the reboot.

We already knew that this movie was jumping from the apocalyptic war of the far future into the franchise's past, with a reimagined scenario in which Sarah Connor (Emilia Clarke) has actually been raised by a terminator (Arnold Schwarzenegger). That by itself would seem like a pretty radical change since it already presents a timeline where the new T-800 (old man Schwarzenegger) has to fight the old T-800 (young man Schwarzenegger). But that's not the only twist the movie has in store.

This doesn't seem like much of a spoiler considering it's what this entire trailer is about, but apparently while all of this is going on, the future John Connor (Jason Clarke) shows up in the past as a new kind of terminator that we've never seen before.

This is actually weirdly similar to the original, but abandoned, ending of Terminator: Salvation, which was never even released on the DVD. In that version, Christian Bale's John Connor is killed and the resistance, fearing that his death will set back all of their progress, decides to cover up his death by putting John Connor's face over a terminator's skeleton. That terminator does what terminators do, though, and kills the inner circle of the resistance.

So now it looks like Terminator Genisys has picked up that ball and run with it, making it so the machines send back a John Connor-looking terminator to kill his own mother. Hopefully they've done a better job of that story than the Salvation crew, though, because it doesn't look like they're able to trim this one out in the editing room.
