Don't feel like surfing through multiple sites to get caught up on today's movie news? Fear not, my friends – welcome to Quick Hits, where you'll surely be able to devour the latest news way faster than it takes me to shout … Mortal Kombat!
'Mortal Kombat 3' is Coming – Yes, the violent video game that eventually became two feature-length movies (with the first actually turning out pretty good) might be heading back for a third installment, if original Scorpion actor (and eighth-degree black belt) Chris Casamassa is to be believed. In an article printed in the San Gabriel Valley Tribune, Casamassa claims production on the third movie is set to begin in September. If true, we'd expect this one to go straight to DVD. [First Showing]
Tobey Maguire Has Marital Issues – Before he suits up for another Spider-Man movie, Tobey Maguire will join Elizabeth Banks in the indie dramedy The Details, from director Jacob Estes. In the film, Maguire and Banks will play a married couple with tons of problems, including infidelity and, um, a group of ravenous raccoons who keep burrowing under the sod in their back yard. Um … okay. [Variety]
Harry Potter Returns to PG – Even though the films are getting darker as Harry grows older and wiser, they've still somehow managed to wrangle a PG rating out of the board for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince following two straight PG-13 installments. Does this mean the Warner Bros. film will make more money than its previous two installments? You be the judge … [Variety]
New 'District 9' Trailer is Freaky – The first full-length trailer for the sci-fi flick District 9 has arrived online and it's definitely a creepy one. The film tells of an alien species who arrive on earth and are then taken hostage by local government who restrict them to one section in South Africa while they try to figure out what to do with them. This is a very cool (and scary) must watch. [Watch The Trailer]
How Martin Scorsese Almost Directed 'Godfather Part II' – In a new interview with Esquire, famed director Francis Ford Coppola opens up about his career and his movies, and says that he wanted to give Martin Scorsese the reigns on Godfather Part II but the studio overruled him because Marty was too young and an unknown at the time. [Esquire]
'Funny People' Gets a Restricted Trailer – These red-band, R-rated restricted trailers are all the rage these days, but I feel bad for those of you under 17 who can't watch. Thus, you'll have to skip this news story because a red-band trailer for Judd Apatow's Funny People just hit MySpace earlier today. The film drops on July 31. [Watch The Trailer]
Spider-Man 4 Gets a Rewrite – While it's supposed to head into production early next year, it looks like Columbia Pictures still isn't happy with the current script for Spider-Man 4 as they've gone and hired Gary Ross (Seabiscuit) to rewrite the thing. Hopefully he doesn't add too many more villains. [Variety]
