According to Latino Review
, Drew Goddard (The Cabin in the Woods) has been picked by Sony to write and direct the first new solo Spider-Man movie, which is tentatively titled Spectacular Spider-Man. That's not too much of a shock, though, considering Goddard had previously been working on writing and directing The Sinister Six for Sony (he also created Netflix's Daredevil series), before all of the Amazing Spider-Man sequel plans got put on hold and this new direction for Spider-Man was revealed.

As for that new direction, Latino Review says they're not going to bother with an origin story, Spider-Man will be in high school, the Sinister Six will be in the movie, and the plot will involve Spider-Man fighting Iron Man in an attempt to prove he has what it takes to join the Avengers.

As for that last detail, remember that Spider-Man's first appearance will be in one of the other movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and that part of Sony and Disney's deal is that members from that MCU can appear in the standalone Spider-Man movies. People reasonably assumed that meant some lower-tier characters, but it looks like they're pulling out the stops for Spectacular Spider-Man. And it makes sense. If you want everyone to show up to your second reboot of Spider-Man, having him fight Iron Man is a pretty good way to put some butts in seats.

The next solo Spider-Man will hit theaters on July 28, 2017. Until Marvel and Sony officially announce the news, this is still considered a rumor.
