We just heard that rising star Boyd Holbrook has been cast as a villain in Logan, the final movie to star Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. Now comes word that Holbrook is being sought to play a more heroic character.

Holbrook is in talks to star in Shane Black's The Predator. The role suddenly opened up because Benicio Del Toro dropped out of consideration, according to The Hollywood Reporter. While Del Toro would have been a fascinating choice for the lead role, especially since Black has teased that the movie will "probably" have a detective story somewhere inside it, Holbrook potentially brings a very fresh edge.

Remember that humor has always been an important element in the scripts that Black and his collaborator Fred Dekker have written over the years; see 1987's The Monster Squad as a prime example.

Holbrook is primarily known as a dramatic actor, thanks to his work on Netflix's Narcos and his roles in Morgan and Gone Girl. Watch a clip from Little Accidents below, featuring him and Elizabeth Banks in a quiet, intimate scene.

That should serve him well if things work out and he ends up with the lead role in The Predator. But throughout his career, he's also demonstrated that he can lighten moments when needed, as in The Skeleton Twins.

Even though Holbrook doesn't have the name recognition of Benicio Del Toro, the idea is to bolster the cast by adding familiar faces in supporting roles. The Predator is scheduled for release on February 9, 2018, by which time Logan will have presumably raised Holbrook's own profile as well. We're eager to see how the cast shapes up for Black's next action movie.
