Superhero fans will have a veritable buffet of crime-fighting features to choose from this summer thanks to new adventures starring Iron Man, Wolverine and the mighty Superman. But the common, everyday hero also will have his time in the sun because Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s coming back to theaters as Kick-Ass in Kick-Ass 2. The first trailer arrived this morning via NextMovie, and we have it for you below.

Be warned! This trailer is a red-band cut, and has a lot of NSFW language and violence:

Introduced on screen in 2010, Kick-Ass is a well-intentioned teenage comic-book reader named Dave who decides to don a skintight suit to take down neighborhood criminals. While he’s in over his head, he also comes to realize he’s not alone, meeting fellow butt-kickers Hit-Girl (Chloe Grace Moretz), Big Daddy (Nicolas Cage) and Red Mist (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) on his various missions. The film was a hit, earning $96 million worldwide and proving there’s a fanbase for Kick-Ass’s adventures.

Mark Millar and John Romita Jr.’s comics, which inspired the first film, provide the backbone for the movie sequel. Specifically, Millar posted on his blog that the graphic novels Hit-Girl and Kick-Ass 2 will form the basis of the story for Kick-Ass 2

As you can tell from the trailer, it follows Kick-Ass trying to recruit a Justice League-style superhero team while Hit-Girl attempts (unsuccessfully) to assimilate into normal, non-fighting life in high school.

One of many draws to the Kick-Ass sequel has to be presence of Jim Carrey, playing Colonel Stars and Stripes. Listen to that accent he's affecting! Leave it to Carrey to find a new way to approach a familiar character. The heroes must unite to fend off Red Mist, who’s growing more powerful after the end of the first movie and is plotting revenge against Kick-Ass.

Matthew Vaughn did not return to direct the sequel, but passed the baton to Jeff Wadlow (Never Back Down, Cry Wolf). Kick-Ass 2 drops into theaters at the end of the summer, on Aug. 16. What do you think of the first trailer?
