Suicide Squad remains one of the highest-grossing of the DC movies ($747 million worldwide). It’s also the only installment of the DC Extended Universe to win an Oscar. So, there was no doubt that the comic book adaptation, which is focused on a team of super villains who are gathered to save the world, would get a sequel. And Warner Bros. is set on improving upon the original with a new director and a partly changed-up cast of characters.
Previous reports suggested The Suicide Squad, as the new movie is titled, would be a reboot, but we’ve since learned it will indeed be a direct follow-up with some of the original players returning. Will Smith is not one of them, and so last month Idris Elba was cast to replace him as Suicide Squad member Deadshot. Variety has now revealed that the actor will in fact portray a new character, a decision that was made out of respect to Smith.
Here's everything we know about The Suicide Squad:
Who will be back for the sequel?
Given the popularity of Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn, there was no way she would be left out of the sequel. The actress, who is already reprising the role for Birds of Prey and a Joker and Harley Quinn spin-off, is mentioned in current reports as coming back, though there hasn’t yet been any official confirmation on this being the case.
Jai Courtney and Joel Kinnaman, who respectively play Suicide Squad members Captain Boomerang and Rick Flagg in the first movie, are also reportedly on board for The Suicide Squad, and we recently learned Viola Davis is also returning as Amanda Waller, the government official who oversees the group.
No word yet on the rest of the gang save for Will Smith, who is definitely out for the next installment.
Who is joining the cast this time around?
Idris Elba will be one of the newcomers for the sequel. He was initially cast in the part of Deadshot, who was previously portrayed by Will Smith in Suicide Squad. But the studio and filmmakers have since decided to give Elba his own newly introduced part rather than have him replace Smith. Variety doesn’t clarify if this new character will be someone from the comics or a role written specifically for The Suicide Squad.
Dwayne Johnson has long been rumored to have a part in the Suicide Squad follow-up as DC villain Black Adam, but that has never been confirmed. Additionally, Guardians of the Galaxy star Dave Bautista has expressed interest in joining the cast, and that did seem a real possibility given who is now directing the movie, but this has yet to be officially confirmed or denied.
Who is directing the movie?
James Gunn, best known for the first two Guardians of the Galaxy movies, has been hired to direct the sequel, which would imply The Suicide Squad could be a bit lighter, funnier and weirder than the first installment.
Who is writing the screenplay?
Gunn, who also scripted the early 2000s live-action Scooby-Doo movies, has also been tasked with re-writing the sequel's screenplay. In early reports, he was said to be bringing a whole new take to the property.
When does it come out?
Warner Bros. has set the date of August 6, 2021 for the release of The Suicide Squad.
