It was pretty much assumed early on that The Hobbit would attempt some form of 3D, especially since Peter Jackson is a huge fan of the format (he's working with Steven Spielberg on a 3D mo-capped version of Tintin), but until now there's been no announcement. Considering all the financial woes that have plagued the production, would they even find enough money to be able to shoot in 3D? Peter Jackson

Well, the answer appears to be yes. According to a new press release, Jackson will be shooting both parts of The Hobbit utilizing at least 30 RED EPIC cameras, making it amongst the first productions in the world to use the new EPIC cameras. The good thing here is that because they're lighter in weight and smaller in size, it makes it easier to shoot big productions in 3D versus the much larger, clunkier cameras currently in existence.
Jackson tested the RED EPIC earlier this year, and was happy enough with the outcome that he decided to use the camera for this production. Do you think The Hobbit is a film that belongs in 3D, or will it take away from the earlier Lord of the Rings films, which weren't in 3D?
