There has been a lot of Spider-Man news hitting this week, so let's just run down an order of events and see what kind of a conclusion seems reasonable.
1. Marvel Studios mastermind Kevin Feige tells us the next Spider-Man movie will have characters we've never seen on the big screen: "The great thing about the Spidey characters is that there are a lot of them. A lot of them have been in other films. A lot of them from the comics haven’t been in other films yet. We’ll do a combination of both."
2. Sony confirms the rumor that the next solo movie will be called Spider-Man: Homecoming.
3. Birth.Movies.Death reports a rumor it heard that Spider-Man: Homecoming will have the Vulture as one of its villains.
4. Variety reports former Batman Michael Keaton is in early talks to play a villain in Spider-Man: Homecoming.
So... Michael Keaton is playing the Vulture, right? You'd think so, but there are other options.
BMD's report mentioned Vulture, a former inventor turned criminal, as a villain, not the only villain. It's very possible Keaton is playing someone else. But considering Feige told us that Homecoming will have characters we haven't seen before, Vulture would check out. Then again, so would someone like Kraven the Hunter, but we're betting Keaton isn't playing a huge, muscle-bound poacher. An aging villain like Vulture, though? It sure does fit.
The one thing that makes us think Keaton may be someone other than Vulture (Mysterio, maybe?) is the simple fact that he made an entire movie about a guy who played a literal birdman in a superhero franchise. That would be such on-the-nose casting that it may be just too cheeky and meta. Or maybe that just makes him an inspired choice. Either way, Keaton is a heck of an actor and it would be delirious fun to see him play a bad guy, so we hope the ink dries on this whole thing.
