Last May's smash hit Iron Man rockets to DVD and Blu-ray today, an essential addition to anyone's collection. Sure it's popcorny fun, but as far as guys playing dress-up in superhero garb, this well-crafted action blockbuster blew me away and became by far my favorite of all last summer's releases.
You know the plot: Robert Downey Jr. plays semi-mad industrialist Tony Stark, who builds a mechanized, supercharged suit of iron that he uses to break out of an Afghan prison, where he's been forced to build a diabolical weapon for the bad guys. Once free, he builds a more advanced model to use to right all the wrongs that have come from the war weaponry he created and sold all over the world, a concept his company's money-centric, power-hungry second-in-command is less than thrilled about. Action and conflict ensue. Before its release, you could have set up an office pool to bet who thought the Robert Downey Jr./director Jon Favreau combo, an iffy one by studio standards, would have worked--but a $100 million opening weekend later, and execs were no doubt working on sequel contracts.

Extras: Astonishingly, no Favreau commentary. Maybe milking that for a future edition? Lots of bonus features include 11 deleted/extended scenes, plus a bunch of featurettes on the character, the special effects and the suit and the making of the film. Footage of Downey Jr.'s screen test is a fascinating look at the casting/characterization process. There's also a funny bit from The Onion News Network, about the adaptation of the movie's trailer into a film. Definitely give that a look.
Overview: A don't-miss release whose packaging and presentation live up to the extremely high-quality feature film.
