He’s British. He’s beloved as a filmmaker. And he is a self-professed Bond fan.

But does that mean Christopher Nolan is the right director to helm James Bond 24

I ask in response to a new report in The Daily Mail claiming that producers of the Bond franchise are in “informal talks” with Nolan about possibly filling the vacancy left by Skyfall helmer Sam Mendes.

“It does no harm for [Bond producers] Broccoli and Wilson to talk with Nolan, even if nothing happens this time round,” a source tells the newspaper.

That doesn’t exactly sound like it’s set in stone. And there are reasons why Nolan wouldn’t be available for Bond 24. He is in pre-production on his own original film, Interstellar, which has cast Anne Hathaway and Matthew McConaughey. The Bond producers have revealed a strong desire to have the next 007 thriller in theaters by 2014 – to capitalize on the white-hot success of Skyfall – though it’s likely they’ll back off of that claim soon enough given the fact that they don’t even have a director in place yet for the as-yet-untitled sequel.

Nolan, understandably, would be a tremendous get for the Bond franchise. His Batman trilogy made more than $1 billion domestically for Warner Bros., while his one-off films like Inception and The Prestige do well selling off of his name.

Skyfall, meanwhile, holds the distinction of being the highest-grossing Bond film of all time, so you can see why pairing the spy series with Nolan’s talents would have producers drooling. But it’s early, and we’ll see where these discussions go.
