Patrick Wilson has joined the cast of Aquaman. He will portray ORM, according to Deadline. The villainous character, also known as Ocean Master, is the half-brother of the titular hero, to be played by Jason Momoa.
It's a canny casting choice by director James Wan, who has worked with Wilson on his horror hits Insidious, Insidious: Chapter 2, The Conjuring and this summer's The Conjuring 2. In the first two movies, Wilson played a family man struggling to protect his family from evil spirits. In the latter two, he took on the role of real-life, married paranormal investigator Ed Warren.
In all four movies, Wilson convincingly embodied heroic characters and he's been equally persuasive as a good guy in movies such as Bone Tomahawk and on television in shows like Fargo. Yet he's also been quite compelling to watch when he's tackled deeply flawed characters, as in Stretch and Zipper.
As far as superhero movies are concerned, Wilson broke out with his sympathetic supporting performance as Nite Owl in Zack Snyder's Watchmen. The role of Ocean Master, however, is the polar opposite. Ocean Master strongly desires the throne of Atlantis and believes he is entitled to it. So he is constantly battling Aquaman for rulership.
Because of the multiple reboots in the DC comics universe, we're not certain how, exactly, Ocean Master will be depicted, but we're certainly excited to see Wan and Wilson reuniting to create a character who will likely be a dangerous threat to Aquaman.
Aquaman swims into theaters on October 5, 2018.
