New on DVD: 'The Grey' and 'Chronicle,'Which You Can Win

By: Stacie Hougland on May 14, 2012 at 5:59PM Comments (31)

Chronicle Director Josh Trank lends a fresh eye to this spin on the teens-with-superpowers plot as three high schoolers (the popular student body president hopeful, the popular cute smart guy, and his nerdy and picked-on cousin) stumble upon something underground that gives them telekinetic powers. As they zoom through the sky throwing a football around and play jokes on unsuspecting grocery shoppers, it's all fun and games until someone gets hurt--or dead. The story gets dark, then gets even darker until it spirals out of control in a wild ending that falls apart slightly, but all in all it's well done. Even the done-to-death found footage style isn't distracting; the filmmakers cleverly use it when appropriate, and pull back from it when it doesn't serve the story. See this movie, ASAP. Extras: Deleted scene, "Pre-Viz," Camera test, theatrical trailer, soundtrack info (Director's Cut BD Combo Pack)

Win it! If you could have a super power, what would it be? Tell us below, and two lucky winners will get the movie on DVD. U.S. and 18+ please, one entry per person. Winner will be chosen at random May 21 and have 3 days to respond.

The Grey It's man vs. wild in this drama that stars Liam Neeson as the unwitting leader of a band of plane crash survivors stuck out in the Alaskan wilderness, where the weather is bad, the wildlife is worse, and some of the decisions he makes for the group are worst of all--you may find yourself yelling "Don't listen to Liam!" at the screen. Extras: Director commentary, deleted scenes (DVD/BD)

Albert Nobbs It took her 30 years to get this pet project on screen, and Glenn Close earned an Oscar nod for her role as a woman who lives and works--and looks--like a man in order to make money as a waiter in 19th century Ireland. Two decades later, she/he winds up trapped and miserable in this strange and suffocating life she's created. Extras: Glenn Close commentary, deleted scenes (DVD/BD)

One for the Money Katherine Heigl takes the starring role of bail bonds-woman Stephanie Plum, who takes the job out of desperation and then finds herself dealing with a series of misadventures on her way to take down a murder suspect who happens to be her old high school crush. If this sounds familiar, you may be recalling the popular 18-book mystery series by Janet Evanovich. Extras: Behind the scenes featurette, "Bond Girls" featurette, gag reel, deleted scene (DVD/BD)

The Devil Inside Twenty years after her mother confessed to three grisly murders, Isabella travels to Italy where mom is housed in a mental ward to see if she can "cure" her. Exorcism is, of course, involved, as is more found-footage camerawork. Extras: None

Rampart Woody Harrelson channels Denzel Washington via Training Day as a cop who brings his own brand of justice to the streets. Making life no easier are his two ex-wives (who happen to be sisters!?), two daughters, a guy who gives him terrible advice, and his own paranoia. Extras: Cast and crew interviews, behind-the-scenes featurettes (DVD/BD)

I would turn back time and correct wrongs. To keep it from being too easy (i.e. being able to go back and stop Hitler, etc.), if this were a movie or comic book or whatever...the power would be limited, like being able to go back in time an hour or a day or even a week at most. As a superhero, even though I'd be able to go back in time and right wrongs, I'd still have to chose which wrongs to right--as not everything bad in the world could be fixed. That would cause serious dilemmas for me and guilt at which calamities I couldn't avoid, etc. (Just trying to make this fictional superhero of mine have some depth. Ha!).
