Who Wore It Better: Penguins or Actors in Penguin Suits?
'Penguins of Madagascar' has got us thinking about how dapper movie penguins look – and how dapper the human stars of penguin movies look in their "penguin suits" (a.k.a. tuxedos). Enjoy these side-to-side comparisons.
Benedict Cumberbatch
We’re sure the animation veterans who voice the four ‘Penguins of Madagascar’ also look dashing in tuxedos, but the lanky British thespian – who plays a wolf – was practically born to wear one. His penguin co-star must concede.
Ken Jeong
Jeong, who plays a seal in ‘Penguins of Madagascar,’ appears to avoid penguin suits in real life as well. We could find no photos of him in an actual tux, so we must disqualify him on a technicality. Winner: Penguin.
John Malkovich
The villainous octopus that Malkovich voices in ‘Penguins of Madagascar’ can’t possibly be as frightening as the sight of Malkovich in a highly-explosive tuxedo in the 2010 action flick ‘RED.’ We give the edge to his penguin adversary.
Morgan Freeman
The subjects of 'March of the Penguins' (2005) exude their own kind of cool -- the Antarctic kind, that is -- but with their slouches and their waddles, they’re not nearly as suave as their documentary's golden-voiced narrator is.
Elijah Wood
Wood lent his vocal talents to 2006's 'Happy Feet' as the tap dance-crazed Mumble. Actual sightings of the actor in a tuxedo are so rare, and Mumble is so cute, that we have to give this round to the penguin.
Robin Williams
The late great comedian never seemed the sort who could be corralled into a tux, but he looks quite debonair in this 1998 photo. Compare that to Williams's slovenly 'Happy Feet' character Lovelace, and there’s no contest.
Hugh Jackman
We're not sure if anyone has ever worn a tuxedo as often as Hugh Jackman has, so we'll just give this one to him. His own 'Happy Feet' character Memphis (right) will surely understand.
Shia LaBeouf
As of late, LaBeouf has been known more for his red carpet shenanigans than for his red carpet glamour, but he cleaned up nice at the 2012 Venice Film Festival. You can't quite say the same for his 'Surf's Up' (2007) character, Cody.
Jeff Bridges
Bridges, who voices the legendary Big Z in 'Surf's Up,' is as laid-back as it gets. But he sure looks spiffy in his penguin suit – and the Oscar adds a nice touch. Big Z, on the other hand, might just be the sloppiest penguin on Earth.
Jim Carrey
Carrey's orange tuxedo in 1994's 'Dumb and Dumber' will always hold a special place in our hearts, but let's get real: any one of his avian co-stars from 2011's 'Mr. Popper's Penguins' would outshine him in the tux department.
Danny DeVito
We couldn't close out this gallery without a nod to the Penguin himself. In 'Batman Returns' (1992), DeVito's Oswald Cobblepot has a face not even a mother could love, but his Edwardian suit makes him stand out amongst his grubby penguin pals.
