Kristen Stewart transforms into a teen stripper/prostitute in Welcome to the Rileys (see exclusive clip), but it's not the first time she's forayed into roles that require some grit. Remember The Runaways? Many actresses have kickstarted their resume by jumping from family friendly fare to more mature roles—some more abruptly than others. Here's our list of some favorite movie good girls who've gotten down with their darker selves.
Sharon Stone – Basic Instinct
Before Basic Instinct, Stone had a career in modeling and films like Police Academy IV. In her breakthrough role, she starred as a smoldering, bisexual crime novelist who's suspected of murdering a former rock star during sex. Michael Douglas co-stars as the detective hot on her trail, who's at the same time seduced by her. Don't let her sexy façade fool you. This cold-hearted goddess is extremely handy with an ice pick.
Natalie Portman – Closer
Portman ditches her princess persona, jets to London, dons a new moniker and pink wig, and tries her hand at stripping in Closer. No treacly sweetness here. She's highly effective in the role of a needy, insecure lover who gets entangled in an affair-ridden relationship with Jude Law and Clive Owen.
Sarah Michelle Gellar – Cruel Intentions
The actress also known as Buffy switched from slaying vampires to masterfully manipulating others as Kathryn, a seductress who wages a bet with her womanizing step-brother: If he can get Annette Hargrove, an outspoken virgin, to sleep with him, she'll offer him a night of passion with herself—the only girl he can't seem to bed. If he loses, she wins his Jaguar.
Michelle Williams - Deception
In this 2008 mystery thriller, Michelle Williams puts all traces of her "Dawson's Creek" adolescence behind her as a mysterious blond who tantalizes Ewan McGregor's regular guy accountant. He's caught up with a crazy sex club known as The List, and a lawyer pal who may not have his best interests at heart. Williams? Well, she's a femme fatale he might want to keep an eye on, too.
Rachel McAdams - Mean Girls
Nothing's more vicious than a high school queen bee. McAdams dishes out constant criticisms and acerbic rumors while seething with snark and maintaining a picture-perfect profile. Her hellish side seeks vengeance on newcomer Lindsay Lohan for stealing the spotlight. Offscreen...that's another story...
Drew Barrymore – Poison Ivy
Barrymore went from adorable children's fare to erotic drama with her part as a teen vixen who covets her friend's luxurious lifestyle. It's not long before she starts plotting the murder of her friend's mom and has an affair with her friend's dad – in the forest…and on the hood of his Mercedes…while it's raining. See ya, E.T.
Anne Hathaway - Rachel Getting Married
She's a long way from The Princess Diaries, but in this hilarious dramedy from director Jonathan Demme, Hathaway's sense of bad is oh-so-deliciously-good. She's cast here as Kym, a recovering addict who's released from rehab just in time for her sister's wedding. Guess who brings the fireworks?
Dakota Fanning - The Runaways
Known for her angelic, family friendly characters, Fanning explodes into cherry bomb maturity with her portrayal of singer Cherie Currie. It's a no holds barred biopic of the teenage all-girl rock band, and all the sex, drugs, and rock and roll experimentation that accompanied them.
Maggie Gyllenhaal - Secretary
Prior to Secretary, we imagined Maggie Gyllenhaal as just the every girl next door and older sister of morose brother Jake in Donnie Darko. Then, she popped up as the kinky, submissive office assistant to James Spader's domineering employer...and all bets were off.
Alexis Bledel - Sin City
Ever youthful Bledel made her TV debut as a Gilmore Girl and went on to the big screen in the cute Tuck Everlasting. She became more widely known for her artsy role in The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants movies, but she also portrayed Becky, a young prostitute in Sin City. Behind those sparkling blue eyes is a lack of innocence and lots and lots of treachery.
Vanessa Hudgens - Sucker Punch
This former Disney diva teams with Zack Snyder, picks up a machine gun and the nickname "Blondie." We'll soon see what Synder has in store for Hudgens and other beauties, but we're guessing there'll be tons of butt-kicking in this "Alice in Wonderland with machine guns" flick.
Alicia Silverstone – The Crush
At 14, the lonely, attractive and mentally unbalanced Darien (Silverstone) has nothing better to do than obsess over a journalist. She spends her time sunbathing and calling him excessively. When he doesn't return her advances, she of course sabotages his life –vandalizing his car, erasing his files, trapping his girlfriend in a darkroom and unleashing a wasp's nest in the vents. You know, just the usual...
