COMEBACK KIDS: OUR FAVORITE STARS WHO BOUNCED BACK
There’s nothing Hollywood likes more than a good comeback story. Who wouldn’t like a second – or third – chance at stardom? Here are some of our favorite “comeback kids.”
Mickey Rourke
Rourke was THE actor to watch in the '80s, before his career hit the skids. But in 2005, he bounced back with 'Sin City' and then earned an Oscar nom for his compelling turn in 2008's 'The Wrestler.'
Andrew Dice Clay
The Diceman was a big deal in the '90s, with his unique brand of stand-up comedy. His star eventually faded, until Woody Allen cast him in 2013's critically acclaimed 'Blue Jasmine.' Clay is now set to star in an upcoming pilot for HBO, produced by Martin Scorsese.
John Travolta
Travolta seems to have a resurgence every other decade. In the 1990s, he had two: 'Look Who's Talking' was a hit, but it was 'Pulp Fiction' that put the actor back on the A-list.
Kim Basinger
This blonde beauty was known in Hollywood for basically just that – being blonde and beautiful. And for having a tumultuous relationship with ex-husband Alec Baldwin. But in 1997, Basinger won respect – and an Academy award – for her role in 'L.A. Confidential.'
Jackie Earle Haley
Haley was a child actor in the '70s, best know for his role in 'The Bad News Bears.' After years of being out of the spotlight, he caught Hollywood's attention again with his Oscar-nominated turn in 2006's 'Little Children.' This role lead to Haley being cast in 2009's 'Watchmen,' based on the popular graphic novel.
Katharine Hepburn
One of Hollywood's most famous stars was once labeled "box office poison," after a series of big-screen misfires. But in 1940, Hepburn bounced back with the now-classic film, 'The Philadelphia Story.'
Gloria Stuart
The oldest actress ever to receive an Academy Award nomination owes that distinction to her 'Titanic' director James Cameron, who gave Stuart her first starring role in almost 60 years.
Robert Downey Jr.
RDJ went from unemployed tabloid fodder to one of the most bankable stars in the world, thanks to little films like 'Iron Man' and 'The Avengers.'
Joaquin Phoenix
After a rehab stint for alcoholism, a few box office flops and a bout of bizarre behavior the actor later admitted was a hoax, Phoenix's star was back on the rise with Oscar-nominated turns in 'The Master' and 'Her.'
Marlon Brando
The late, great actor -- who made a name for himself in films like 'On the Waterfront' and 'A Streetcar Named Desire' -- hit hard times until Francis Ford Coppola made Brando an offer he couldn't refuse: An iconic role in 'The Godfather.'
