Unfortunately for John Carter, the first big, splashy blockbuster of 2012 was certainly big, but it landed with a thud instead of a splash. Though it grossed over $100 million worldwide in its opening weekend, only $30.6 million of that came from the United States, which doesn’t make it a blockbuster (more like a buster without the block). The Lorax defeated the big-budgeted Disney behemoth with $39.1 million, while Project X ($11.6 million), Silent House ($7.01 million) and Act of Valor ($7 million) rounded out the top five.
Eddie Murphy’s latest, A Thousand Words, probably needed a few more good words to get it out of sixth place ($6.35 million), where it landed just above films like Safe House and The Vow, both in theaters for five weeks now.
Over at Rotten Tomatoes, things don’t look much better. Everything at the top of the box office has a rotten rating, with A Thousand Words achieving the all-too-rare 0% Rotten rating. So if you saw A Thousand Words this weekend and actually liked it, you’d be in the real minority. Definitely speak up below and let us know what you liked about it.
