Gotta admit I did not expect both Safe House and The Vow to have enough strength to power over the new releases, but that’s exactly what happened. Safe House ($24 million) and The Vow ($23.6 million) somehow managed to fight off Nicolas Cage’s Ghost Rider sequel ($22 million), forcing this week’s highest grossing new release into third place. This Means War didn’t exactly mean business at the box office, settling for fifth place and $17.6 million. Meanwhile, the lesser-known (and promoted) animated flick The Secret World of Arrietty opened in ninth place with $6.3 million.
Naturally, guess which of these films was most favored by critics? Yup, the ninth place animated film, which scored a nice 93% Fresh over at Rotten Tomatoes, while the highest-grossing new release (Ghost Rider 2) was disliked enough to warrant a 15% Rotten rating. This Means War wound up hiding between the two at 25% Rotten.
Just because critics bashed two of the latest new releases doesn’t exactly mean you feel the same way. Sound off below and let us know how you’d rate the new releases …
