Hear that sound? It’s Hollywood knocking on your door, looking to sell you some scary movies right before Halloween. With the Saw franchise finally out of the picture, Paramount has found a way to continue the always-a-sequel-around-Halloween tradition with their Paranormal Activity franchise, as the third installment arrives this weekend. It’ll be up against a 3D steam-punkish version of The Three Musketeers from Alien vs. Predator director Paul W.S. Anderson. Who will win? Who will lose? And who will go to sleep with the lights on? Let’s take a closer look …

What’s The Scoop: Essentially a prequel, the third installment in the popular found-footage horror franchise finds us back in 1988 where we visit two sisters, Katie and Kristi, as little girls who befriend an invisible “something” in their home. And then … JUMP SCARE!

Why It Might Win The Weekend: Because the first two did great business, and with no competition from the Saw folks or any other major horror franchise, the box office is theirs for the taking (and haunting).

What’s The Scoop: Three former legendary fighters must reunite in order to take down a treacherous duo out to seize the French throne.

Why It Might Win The Weekend: The 3D and wild special effects should lure in those looking for a visual spectacle this weekend, plus the story is familiar since it’s been around for well over 100 years. Will that be enough to fight off some ghosts? We’ll see …

My Prediction: It’s almost Halloween and it’s the only horror franchise showing up to the ball this year, so I’m going with Paranormal Activity 3 for the win.

My Pick of the Week: It took Sundance by storm, is nominated for some Gotham Awards this year and features the debut of an actress a lot of people are buzzing about in Elizabeth Olsen. You may have a hard time remembering the name Martha Marcy May Marlene, but the moody drama about a girl who escapes a cult is surely one of the best of the year.

Now it’s your turn – sound off below and let us know which film you think will win the weekend
