Earlier this year the rights to the Terminator franchise shifted from Halycon Media to Pacificor LLC in an auction after Halycon had to rid themselves of the weight due to all sorts of financial woes. At that time it was believed that we’d eventually see another Terminator movie – perhaps one that picked up where Terminator Salvation left off – but not for a good while since the franchise’s new owners would need to find a home for another sequel.
Well, guess what? It looks like they’ve found that home, as Hannover House and Red Bear Entertainment have released a press release saying that production will begin in January 2011 on a $70 million 3D animated feature based on the Terminator characters and storyline called Terminator 3000. Furthermore, they’re going to cut down on the violence so they can release that sucker with a PG-13 rating.
Animated Terminator? PG-13 rating? 3D? Hardcore fans of the franchise can’t be all too happy about this, though considering Terminator Salvation cost over $200 million and only grossed $125 million, I can see why the new owners want to play it safe. Still, though, is this really the best way to go with this franchise? Couldn’t we cut that budget by bringing the story back to present day or even rebooting the entire franchise?
