Interstellar hasn’t even been in theaters for a week, but people are already wondering what director Christopher Nolan is going to do next. The director revealed what isn’t on his upcoming slate of projects in this new interview with The Daily Beast.
While we recently learned that Nolan is a huge Star Wars fanboy (he made his own Star Wars fan films as a child), the director says he wouldn’t exactly jump at the opportunity to make an official entry in the new series.
“I’m pretty excited to see what J.J. [Abrams] is going to do with [Star Wars: Episode VII]. I’m excited to see that he’s shooting on film and actually built the Millennium Falcon. As far as whether or not I would have ever done it, the truth is I think I’d be afraid to touch it! He’s boldly going where he went before in Star Trek, and it takes colossal balls."
So, if Star Wars is off the table, what about James Bond? Nolan has expressed interest in helming a 007 film numerous times over the course of the past few years. Could he make the jump from deep-space exploration to the world of gadgetry and intrigue that Bond inhabits?
“I love James Bond and I’ve talked with the producers over the years, but nothing’s ever worked out. They do a great job—they don’t need me right now, and Sam [Mendes] is an extraordinary talent. I will absolutely be first in line to see the next Bond film as I have been for all of them."
Hmm… no Star Wars and no Bond – maybe a return to superhero movies?
“I worked on [The Dark Knight trilogy] for a long time—almost 10 years—and had an incredible experience. It was totally fulfilling, so I’m done with that part of my life. But it was really thrilling."
Guess we can scratch that off the list too. Basically, at this point, we have no idea what Nolan might do next. Considering his desire to push cinematic boundaries, we think he'll move on to something new and original, and not part of an established franchise.
It’s fun to speculate, though. What films would you want to see Nolan make in the future? Sound off below.
