The biggest question we walk away with after watching Star Wars: The Force Awakens is who pays for all the damage after Kylo Ren has a hissy fit with his lightsaber? And then after that... well, who, exactly, is Rey? The easiest conclusion -- what with her connection to Luke Skywalker's old lightsaber -- is that she's a Skywalker. But is she Luke's daughter? Is she Han Solo and Leia's daughter? Or is she someone else entirely?
Could it be that Rey is actually... Obi-Wan Kenobi's granddaughter?
Ben Ostrower wrote an excellent post detailing this scenario, and you'd be hard-pressed to disagree with anything he puts out there. From Ob-Wan calling out to her when she first touched the lightsaber to her accent (Rey and Obi-Wan are the only "good guys" with British accents in the entire series, save for C-3PO), there's a lot in The Force Awakens that points to its star actually being a Kenobi and not a Skywalker.
From Ostrower's post...
Reversal of the mentors
It wouldn’t be wild speculation to assume that Luke will now train Rey in the ways of the Jedi in Episode 8. If Rey is a Kenobi (admit it, you’re convinced), this would be a profound and emotional reversal of the role of mentor and teacher: a Kenobi training a Skywalker followed by a Skywalker training a Kenobi. Narrative symmetry.
Parallels to Kenobi vs. Skywalker duels
Both Episodes 3 and 4 end with fateful duels between Obi Wan and Anakin/Darth. While there are certainly duels between Skywalkers (5 and 6), I’d suggest that Rey and Kylo Ren’s duel at the end of 7 becomes much more dramatic if we eventually learn that they are refighting the battle of their grandfathers, not two battling cousins or siblings.
All of his points make complete sense, and revealing her to be Kenobi's granddaughter would give the second movie a fantastic Empire-like twist to help bring balance to the entire series. As Ostrower points out, how incredible would it be if after nine movies, we learn that it was really about the Kenobi family and not the Skywalkers after all. That it's up to the Kenobis to bring balance to the Force cause those Skywalkers are just too damn unstable.
A decision like that would not just change the way you look at The Force Awakens, but the entire series as a whole. It's kinda brilliant when you really think about it, no? And heck, it might even make the prequels better, too.
Of course they'd need to explain who Kenobi shacked up with in order for Rey to exist. And wouldn't it be funny if, say, Luke fell for Kenobi's daughter and Rey is actually both a Skywalker AND a Kenobi? That'd throw a bit of a wrinkle in the whole galaxy. We likely won't find out Rey's true identity till the next film, but it's fun to take wild guesses!
Who would you like to see as Rey's parents?
