Writer-director Channing Godfrey Peoples’ Miss Juneteenth tells the story of Turquoise (Nicole Beharie), a past titleholder whose life hasn’t gone quite as she expected. Turquoise is set on daughter Nia (Alexis Chikaeze) winning this year’s pageant, which awards a college scholarship to the winner. Nia, however, has other ideas.

In this exclusive clip, we learn about the history of Juneteenth and the purpose of the pageant. As Turquoise discovers, getting a teenager to pay attention can be a struggle.
