David O. Russell is getting the band(s) back together… though you might not recognize most of the cast members who have worked with the director multiple times before.

By staging the period thriller American Hustle, Russell has bathed gorgeous stars like Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper, Amy Adams and Christian Bale in grotesquely outdated ‘70s garb – and he just might have created the contemporary answer to Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas

The new trailer just dropped on Yahoo Movies. What does it teach us?

- Jesus taught us to “always take a favor over money.” Check the Bible.

- Cooper is “the quarterback” of this operation, but it’s hard to take him seriously when he’s wearing pink curlers in his hair.

-  Bale is rocking an “elaborate” comb over. And a fat gut. But he still gets the ladies (Adams, in particular).

- Eventually, the con games played by the hustlers are going to get a lot of people into a lot of trouble.

Russell’s film re-creates the infamous ABSCAM scandal, where con artists were employed by the FBI to take down a string of corrupt politicians. But once they started digging, they realized that the corruption in Philly and South Jersey extended pretty far up the chain of command.

The movie looks spectacular. Will it be an Oscar contender, as Russell’s last two films – The Fighter and Silver Linings Playbook – managed to be? We’ll find out when American Hustle opens in theaters on December 25.
