In search of New Moon's director, Summit Entertainment is this close to anointing Chris Weitz (The Golden Compass) as Catherine Hardwicke's replacement. He's not yet confirmed, but EW.com says a deal is imminent, and the studio has stopped talking to other directors.

As a Twilighter, I'm not opposed to a man's perspective on an unabashed romance. If Weitz—or any male for that matter—can tell a compelling story, then I'm all for it. The question is, are other Twilighters open to the idea of the guy who co-wrote and directed American Pie tackling the next chapter of this lovey-dovey melodrama? Maybe author Stephenie Meyer simply needs to give him her blessing (like she did with Robert Pattinson) and fans will approve. Even if she didn't, the Twilight fan base seems voracious enough to eat up anything Summit has to offer.
