Today in Movie Culture: ‘Detective Pikachu’ Pokémon Auditions, ‘Hellboy’ vs. ‘Avengers,’ ‘Dumbo’ VFX Breakdown and More

Here are a bunch of little bites to satisfy your hunger for movie culture:

Audition Video of the Day:

Tickets for Pokémon: Detective Pikachu are now on sale! To mark the occasion, Ryan Reynolds, voice of the title character, shared a behind-the-scenes look at the movie’s casting process. This compilation of audition clips also doubles as a guide to the Pokémon appearing in the video game adaptation:

VFX Breakdown of the Day:

How amazing are the computer-generated elephants in Disney’s new live-action version of Dumbo? Enough to believe that a baby pachyderm can actually fly! For Little White Lies, the movie’s visual effects supervisor, Richard Stammers, shows us how his team brought the title character to virtual life:

Mashup of the Day:

Speaking of Dumbo, Funny or Die combined scenes from the Tim Burton-helmed reimagining with clips and audio from the new teaser for DC’s Joker. Not only do they mash together perfectly, but the idea is especially funny since Burton also gave us his own version of the Joker in the 1989 movie Batman:

Cosplay of the Day:

Joker is out later this year, but Shazam! is now in theaters and another big hit for the DC Extended Universe. In honor of the whole franchise, a fan combined the looks of the most recent solo DC superhero movie stars, Shazam, Wonder Woman and Aquaman, for an incredible mashup cosplay concept:

Plot Song of the Day:

Shazam! has everything you could want in a superhero movie, except for a rap song detailing the origin of its hero played during the end credits. Fortunately, Aaron Fraser-Nash has created a first-person plot song parody set to the tune of Eminem’s “The Real Slim Shady”:

Movie Analysis of the Day:

Everybody has their own take on the meaning of Jordan Peele’s Us. Now it’s The Film Theorists’ turn. In the latest edition of Film Theory, MatPat explains how the twist-filled story of the hit horror movie is a metaphor for the nightmare of the American dream:

Movie Trailer Parody of the Day:

We’re just two weeks away from the release of Avengers: Endgame, and the anticipation is killing us. Fortunately, Aldo Jones is back to feed our excitement with the distraction of a Weird Trailer. This one takes on the latest Endgame spot with a surreal mash-up featuring nods to Sister Act, the live-action Aladdin and the Ghostbusters remake:

Movie Science of the Day:

While waiting for the release of Avengers: Endgame, fans are theorizing about the events of the epic installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. No speculation has garnered more attention, however, than a certain kind of face-off between Ant-Man and Thanos. Whether or not such a scene exists, here’s pop scientist Kyle Hill on whether or not the idea would even be possible:

Movie Comparison of the Day:

Since we’re on the subject of The Avengers, Couch Tomato used the occasion of the Hellboy reboot opening in theaters to point out 24 reasons why Avengers: Age of Ultron is pretty much the same movie as Guillermo del Toro’s first Hellboy. Starting with the easy fact that both are based on comic books. Watch it here:

Classic Movie Trailer of the Day:

As the Hellboy reboot arrives in theaters, let’s take this time to look back at the previous adaptation of the comic book starring Ron Perlman as the devilish antihero. Courtesy of Movieclips, here is the original trailer for Guillermo del Toro’s Hellboy, which arrived in theaters just over 15 years ago, on April 2, 2004:
