Kelly Marie Tran is a Disney Princess: Star Wars actress Kelly Marie Tran (pictured above) has been cast as the titular lead for Disney’s Raya and the Last Dragon. Entertainment Weekly revealed the Vietnamese-American actress replaces the previously cast Cassie Steele as the voice of the princess Raya in the movie, which is due in March 2021. Tran makes history as the first Southeast Asian actress to lead a Disney animated feature.

John Carpenter to redo The Thing: Following their partnership on the resurrection of the Halloween franchise, Blumhouse Productions and legendary filmmaker John Carpenter are teaming up for a reboot of The Thing. Carpenter directed the 1982 movie, which itself is a remake of the 1951 sci-fi horror flick The Thing from Another World. He revealed the collaboration himself, via report by Variety, but no further details were mentioned.

Beyoncé’s co-director to helm The Color Purple: Another redo on the way is the musical version of The Color Purple, based on the Broadway show, which was adapted from the 1985 drama. While the original film’s director, Steven Spielberg, will produce the update for Warner Bros., Deadline reports that Ghana-born filmmaker and composer Blitz Bazawule is taking the helm of the remake. He recently garnered raves as co-director of the Beyoncé visual album Black is King

The Nutty Professor resurrected: Speaking of remakes, The Nutty Professor is about to strike again, and third time could be the charm for a property that previously starred Jerry Lewis in the 1960s and Eddie Murphy in the 1990s as the titular scientist. According to Deadline, this version is only in early development from the same producers who are busy resurrecting the Scream film series.

Adam Pally to portray John Belushi: Eddie Murphy’s SNL predecessor John Belushi has had a biopic in the works for years, and now it’s gaining steam. Collider reports that actor Adam Pally (Sonic the Hedgehog) will star in the movie, titled Belushi, as the comedy icon. David Frankel (The Devil Wears Prada) will direct with Ike Barinholtz portraying Dan Aykroyd and Aubrey Plaza playing Belushi’s girlfriend turned wife, Judith Jacklin.

Sony scores The Kaiju Score: In comic book movie news, James Patrick and Rem Broo’s The Kaiju Score is heading to the big screen courtesy of Sony Pictures, according to Deadline. Publisher AfterShock describes the comic as a mix of Quentin Tarantino, Ocean’s 11 and Godzilla movies, making it a sure thing for genre film fans.
