There are so many beats in Star Wars: The Force Awakens that feel like direct nods to the original trilogy, most notably the very first Star Wars movie, A New Hope. From our hero's journey to the villain's true identity and everything in between, The Force Awakens feels more like a soft reboot at times than it does a fresh story we haven't seen before.
In fact, there are some things we've definitely seen before, and we're not just talking about Han Solo, Chewbacca and the rest of those classic characters. In a new behind-the-scenes video, Adam Savage takes us to Tippett Studio to watch them piece together a stop-motion animated sequence that functions as a neat little cameo for fans in The Force Awakens.
The scene in question comes when we're on the Millennium Falcon and Finn accidentally hits a button that turns on the Dejarik holochess board, briefly distracting Chewbacca, who you'll remember is a bit of a sore loser when it comes to this game.
Here's the scene from the original movie.
The moment in The Force Awakens functions as a fun reference, especially when you know the story behind how they re-created all of these little characters because the original pieces had disintegrated over time. The best part of it all, though? The scene in The Force Awakens is a direct continuation of the game that was being played in A New Hope.
Says Tippett, "We elected to pick up where we left off… and we just swapped out who wins this time."
