The upcoming horror movie Annabelle isn't a sequel or prequel to The Conjuring, although it may certainly look like one. It's actually a spin-off, taking the demonic doll known as Annabelle and tossing her into her own movie. In honor of the creepy doll's return to the big screen, here are some other memorable movie spin-offs.
Beauty Shop (2005)
Barbershop was one of the sleeper hits of 2002, so much so that it inspired a sequel and a 2005 spin-off, which followed the girls of a beauty shop instead of the boys of a barbershop.
Elektra (2005)
When the credits rolled at the end of Daredevil, Jennifer Garner's Elektra was dead and buried. We even get to see her funeral! But in true comic book fashion, she was resurrected from the dead for this spin-off and sent on a ninja-filled adventure across the world.
Machete (2010)
Machete actually began as a fake trailer attached to Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez's Grindhouse. Due to fans loving the character, Rodriguez decided to expand upon his Mexican assassin and the resulting movie is appropriately insane.
Puss in Boots (2011)
Antonio Banderas' character of Puss in Boots was ready for his spin-off movie the moment he first arrived on-screen in Shrek 2. An Ocean's Eleven-style heist movie set in a fantasy world, Puss in Boots embraces its title character's rogue nature and the results are, uh, purrfect.
Supergirl (1984)
Everyone is familiar with the original Superman movie featuring Christopher Reeve as the Man of Steel, but how many people remember its spin-off Supergirl? Helen Slater starred as Superman's cousin in this film, which found the female hero battling a wicked witch (Faye Dunaway).
Get Him to the Greek (2010)
Russell Brand's crazy music-star character from Forgetting Sarah Marshall was such a hit that he was spun off into his own movie, Get Him to the Greek. This time he was paired with Jonah Hill, a lowly record-company intern tasked with getting the out-of-control star to an upcoming concert.
The Ewok Adventure (1984)
What do you do after all the Star Wars movies are done and no longer in theaters? Well, you try out movies based on some of the franchise's fan favorites, like the family-friendly Ewoks from Return of the Jedi. This wasn't a huge success, but that never slowed down the popularity of this franchise. Heck, maybe we'll even see them again in one of the upcoming sequels.
X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009)
Hugh Jackman's take on the popular X-Man proved such a hit with audiences that he was given his first solo spin-off movie in 2009. The film, which explored the mutant's backstory, fell short with critics but proved successful at the box office -- spawning a 2013 sequel, with a third installment in the works.
U.S. Marshals (1998)
Harrison Ford's The Fugitive was a huge hit, and much of that had to do with the popularity of Tommy Lee Jones' character, U.S Marshal Sam Gerard, who reprises the character in this spin-off. Wesley Snipes replaced Ford as Jones' latest criminal target, who is also wrongly accused of murder.
The Scorpion King (2002)
Part of what helped define Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson as one of today's leading action heroes was his role as the feorcious, larger-than-life Scorpion King. First introduced to audiences in The Mummy Returns, Johnson returned to give the fan favorite a wild, action-packed spin-off.
