The marketing for Star Wars: The Force Awakens thus far has remained ridiculously calculated, with each new trailer -- three in total, plus a 15-second Instagram video -- slowly revealing more footage. With the arrival of the most recent trailer, deemed the film's final one, we thought maybe we were done seeing new The Force Awakens footage until it arrives in theaters on December 18.
We were wrong.
A new international trailer for the film has arrived online, and while its subtitles are not in English, the footage -- and there's a lot of new shots in here -- is. From Rey (Daisy Ridley) and Finn (John Boyega) learning each other's names to Chewbacca blowing something up...
... to Kylo Ren threatening Rey with his plasma blade to additional shots from scenes featured in previous trailers, this new preview definitely offers up a larger taste of the movie.
Check it out.
So what more do we learn here?
Well, we hear a lot from Rey -- and perhaps the trailer's biggest revelation is that not only will we see her meet BB-8 for the first time, but when she does she tells the droid that she knows all about waiting... "for her family." What family? Who is she waiting for, exactly? And are they connected to other Star Wars characters we already know?
And check out this shot of Rey gliding across the Jakku landscape. Feels so much like those early scenes with Luke on Tatooine in Star Wars: A New Hope.
We also hear more from Lupita Nyong'o's character Maz Kanata, though we still do not see her. One intriguing line comes at the end when she says, "Hope is not lost today." That leads us to believe something devastating happens to our characters -- but what?
C-3PO! (Plus we love how reminiscent this shot of the rebels (including Leia and Poe) huddling around their rebel base is of the very first Star Wars movie.
Notice the similarities?
Then there's the moment when Kylo Ren holds his plasma blade up against Rey's face. We sense a connection between these two, but what is it?
And one of the trailer's most astounding shots might seem a little familiar to film fans. Is J.J. Abrams channeling Apocalypse Now here?
And finally, here's a new international poster to go along with the trailer.
