If one Star Wars movie isn't enough for you, Disney has plans for a lot more content set in the galaxy far, far away. Following the news of Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss being handed a series of Star Wars films, Disney chairman-CEO Bob Iger revealed to investors that multiple Star Wars TV shows are in development for the company's new streaming platform.
We heard about one of these shows last November (similarly at the same time as a new movie trilogy was announced). That one will be the long-awaited first-ever live-action Star Wars series, and we still don't know much about it. But Iger claims they're about to announce details on something once a deal is in place with the talent who'll be involved. He said of the shows (via THR):
"We are developing not just one, but a few Star Wars series specifically for the Disney direct-to-consumer app. We've mentioned that, and we are close to being able to reveal at least one of the entities that is developing that for us. Because the deal isn't completely closed, we can't be specific about that. I think you'll find the level of talent … on the television front will be rather significant as well."
That's good news that Disney is looking for strong creatives for the small screen, as well. Benioff and Weiss, being best known for a cable series, seemed like a good fit to make Game of Thrones-level Star Wars content for the streaming service, but with the duo promoted to the big screen, fans may wonder who else the studio has in mind.
As for whether the other Star Wars series will also be live-action, that's unknown. It's hard to imagine Disney not planning at least one animated show to fill the void when Star Wars Rebels finishes up its final season this spring. While live-action will be something new, there has been a long tradition of Star Wars cartoons and animated series over the decades.
Another thing to consider about there being multiple series in the works is that we're about to get all new worlds and stories via Rian Johnson and Benioff and Weiss's movies, so there's no way of knowing what kinds of characters and events could be the focus if anything is tied-in to those. But an animated series could also be the best outlet for fans to see the continued adventures of Rey or Poe or anyone else from the "Skywalker Saga" movies when they close out next year with Episode IX.
Disney's streaming platform isn't due until late 2019, so we've got plenty of time to hear more about these plans. Presumably at least one of the series will arrive with the launch of the new service.
