Star Wars the last jedi

You can stop calling it Star Wars: Episode VIII now. Disney just made it official. The next entry in the main saga will be called Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

It's a good, clean, simple title. So let's obsess over what exactly it implies.

Option A: The Singular Jedi

In the vernacular of Star Wars, the plural form of Jedi is also Jedi. We know the new movie, written and directed by Rian Johnson, has Luke Skywalker as its main emotional driving force. So the title could obviously be a reference to him. After all, everyone's been looking for Luke for years, and The Force Awakens opening crawl did declare him the last Jedi.

Option B: The Plural Jedi

But maybe the crawl was wrong and Luke isn't alone on his watery island retreat. Maybe he is surrounded by a small group of Jedi who have been in hiding and will now emerge to take on the First Order. The title could be about them, and Rey could be joining their ranks. Or maybe there are no others and it's just Luke and Rey.

Option C: It's Not About Rey

Remember, just because Rey can use the Force doesn't automatically make her a Jedi. She could become a Sith. Maybe she turns her back on Luke and heads to the Dark Side. This option probably isn't very likely.

Option D: Everyone Dies and There Is No Episode IX

It's called The Last Jedi because, regardless if it's singular or plural, they're all slaughtered in the movie and the sequel is called off. Yep, that's probably what happens. We've got this whole thing figured out. (Note: This is definitely not what will happen.)

Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits theaters on December 15, 2017.
