The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo

Deadline is reporting that Sony is pushing ahead with adaptations of parts two and three in Stieg Larsson's Millennium series, The Girl Who Played with Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest — with Rooney Mara as hacker Lisbeth Salander and Daniel Craig appearing as journalist Mikael Blomkvist. We heard rumors for a while that the studio would give both movies the greenlight, despite David Fincher expressing hesitation to move ahead with the projects in press interviews for Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. And we're still not officially sure if Fincher will return (The Playlist says he'll most likely be moving on to 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea), but Sony wants to start filming by the end of 2012. Fincher has previously shared that he'd want to shoot two and three back-to-back, since it makes sense for the storyline — which means the crew may be setting up camp in Sweden for quite a while. Dragon Tattoo's opening numbers were underwhelming, but Sony thinks there's still money to be made here. Will you stick with the trilogy if Fincher passes?

 

—— Mark Wahlberg may be channeling his inner Marky Mark over a rumored growing rift with long-time collaborator, David O. Russell. The Fighter director may have upset the actor when he passed over Wahlberg for a part in the upcoming Silver Linings. Russell opted for Bradley Cooper, which may be tied to a somewhat mysterious reason why the director will not be taking the lead on The Fighter sequel — which he had previously expressed a dedicated interest in working on. A problem with the draft is being cited as the cuprit, and Wahlberg is promising a new name as soon as screenwriter Scott Silver hands over his script. "We got to do that film before I get too old, so maybe in the next year, year and a half. We have to wait for the script, and then we'll choose a director," Wahlberg shared in a recent interview. —— While not officially a big screen sequel, Fox's action-drama 24 will be picking up where the show left off at the movies. Star Kiefer Sutherland — who plays Counter Terrorist Unit agent Jack Bauer — has been making the press rounds for Fox's upcoming series, Touch. Journalists have been sharing blurbs about the potential, long talked about sequel via Twitter, where it seems that Sutherland could begin shooting the movie in April or May. TV Guide shared that Touch "will not prevent Sutherland from doing a #24 movie ... " The L.A. Times' Joe Flint joked, "Keiffer [sic] Sutherland says 24 film starts production in April or May. Of course he didn't say of what year." We're still not sure if a director or script (a Billy Ray screenplay was already turned down in 2010 for not being "strong enough or compelling enough") has been obtained, but fans will be happy to know that Sutherland's heart is still in this.
