At last we’re here. Comic-Con 2012 kicked off this evening with preview night as the doors to the exhibitor’s hall opened for the thousands of comic book and entertainment fans to stroll through. Well, perhaps stroll isn’t the right word. More like muscle your way like a running back scrumming his way to a goal-line touchdown.
While the vendors and artists areas offered up some first-night deals, the majority of the attention was in the center of the massive hall where movie studios and comic book companies set up massive displays that clogged up the aisles with foot traffic.
Not to anyone’s surprise, The Hobbit and Iron Man 3 were the big draw attractions, with Peter Jackson’s two-part fantasy epic taking up three massive exhibitions, including one walk-thru area with hologram character posters. The film will be grouped into Warner Bros. two-and-a-half hour long panel Saturday afternoon, beginning at 2:30 p.m.
The entertainment juggernaut known as Marvel showed off all the various Iron Man suits in a large enclosure. Iron Man will be one of the films touted in Marvel’s Hall H panel Saturday evening, beginning at 6p.
LEGO also drew a large crowd on the floor with various pop culture, Comic-Con-centric figures constructed and displayed on the floor. In addition to a Justice League mural, there were also attractions from Star Wars and, yep, The Hobbit.
Other films showcased on the floor included Sony’s trio of Total Recall, Elysium and Looper, the upcoming James Bond film Skyfall showcased Q’s Jet Boat from The World is Not Enough. Meanwhile, tucked away on the side of The Hobbit poster exhibit was the new Superman costume from Man of Steel.
Pictures were hard to come by as floor staff requested people to keep moving from clogging up the entrance, but you can check out a couple shots of the costume as well as other scenes from Preview Night in this Movies.com photo gallery.
Hall H panels kick off tomorrow afternoon with Twilight: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 at 12:45p.m., though there is already a sizeable crowd of about 1,000 hardcore Twihards who will camp out tonight to ensure their seats to bid the cast farewell. Also on the slate tomorrow will be Disney’s panel with Frankenweenie, Wreck-It Ralph and Sam Raimi’s Oz: The Great and Powerful, a Jackie Chan panel and The Expendables 2 wrapping up the day.
