For as long as we can remember, there have been those little notices that play before movies in theaters reminding us to keep quiet and respect those around us. But just how long have theaters been doing this? Believe it or not, you can go all the way back to 1912 for the first examples of movie-theater etiquette guides, and while some instructions don't work for today's audiences (specifically the no whistling and the intermission), many still apply over 100 years later. (We especially love the one that asks people to applaud with their hands only.)
Thanks to the Library of Congress, here's what it would've looked like to visit movie theaters in 1912.
