“Far off places, daring sword fights, magic spells, a prince in disguise!” Perhaps Belle wasn't only talking about books when she described all of the adventures she longed for.
More than just entertainment, a movie immerses audiences in real or imagined places. Those that target children often depict endearing characters that have a problem to solve, a lesson to learn, or a mission to accomplish.
In Pixar's latest 3D animated film Monsters University, we rediscover our two favorite monsters and explore how this unlikely pair overcame their differences to become the best of friends. Celebrating differences and the often bumpy journey to discovering what one is meant to do are themes that resonate throughout the film. But it's the story of Mike and Sulley's evolving friendship that will likely captivate the hearts of audiences.
In honor of the newly released film and the loyal friendship between Mike and Sulley, here are my five favorite friendships, forged in animation:
1. Woody and Buzz Lightyear in Toy Story
Some of the best friendships originate in rivalry, such is the case with Andy's toys, Woody and Buzz Lightyear. Both toys vie for their owner's attention, but, through a series of conflicts, they put aside their pride and work together. Thus begins a lifelong friendship.
2. Tod and Copper in The Fox and the Hound
In the natural world, they are enemies. But having grown up together, Tod (a red fox) and Copper (a hound dog) become best friends forever. What I personally love about their friendship is their devout loyalty, despite the surrounding pressures telling them to do otherwise.
3. Timon and Pumbaa in The Lion King
Just by nature of geography, it's unlikely that a meerkat and a warthog would ever meet, let alone forge a friendship. Factor in Timon and Pumbaa's personality differences, and you begin to see why their friendship is so unique. Rejected for inherent characteristics (after all, he is a warthog with an odor problem), Timon befriends Pumbaa and the two become inseparable. Through their friendship, we see how important it is to look beyond the surface.
4. Lilo and Stitch in Lilo & Stitch
Perhaps one of the most ardent friendships is that between a child and his/her dog. Unconditional love. Stitch is no ordinary dog, however, and through Lilo's unconditional love, she teaches him that he can become something greater than what he was created to be.
5. Lightning McQueen and Tow Mater in Cars
While many friendships develop over shared commonalities, it is often their differences that unite them. Such is the case with Tow Mater and Lightning McQueen. Through their trials, they learn to accept each other's differences and ultimately become better friends because of them.
Friends come in all shapes and sizes, and through the magic of film, adults and children can take away important life lessons about what it means to be a good friend. See how Mike and Sulley became the best of friends in Monsters University in theaters nationwide.
