The nominees for the 77th Golden Globe Awards were announced this morning. As usual, some of the nominees were expected, such as Frozen II (Best Animated Feature) and Ford v Ferrari (Christian Bale, Best Actor - Drama, above), two of the box office leaders over the weekend.
The nominees also included several pleasant surprises. Sometimes, it's not the film itself, but one element in particular that grabs the attention of awards groups. Here are three nominees that we weren't expecting to see.
Recently we touted Rian Johnson's marvelous suspense thriller as a Best Picture contender, so seeing the comic mystery nominated as Best Motion Picture - Musical/Comedy is entirely deserved. Daniel Craig's Best Actor nomination also seems quite fitting, leaving the biggest surprise to be Ana de Armas, who was recognized with a Best Actress nomination, alongside the unexpected nomination for Beanie Feldstein in Booksmart and the more expected nods for Awkwafina (The Farewell, Emma Thompson (Late Night) and Cate Blanchett (Where'd You Go, Bernadette?).

Films directed by Clint Eastwood have often garnered award nominations. Kathy Bates won an Academy Award and a Golden Globe for her performance in Misery, as well as another Golden Globe win for TV's The Night Shift and five previous nominations. Still, it's a lovely surprise that Bates was singled out for her role portraying the quietly outraged mother of a falsely-accused security guard.

The big-screen adaptation of the popular Broadway musical is an ensemble piece, so it makes perfect sense that it earned a Golden Globe nomination for one of its songs. What is perhaps more surprising is that the song was written by Taylor Swift and Andrew Lloyd Webber. Swift has received two previous Golden Globe nominations for cowriting songs from The Hunger Games and One Chance.
