The New Mutants

After X-Men: Apocalypse, what comes next for Fox's mutant universe?

The third installment of the Wolverine series, featuring the final lead performance by Hugh Jackman, will be released on March 3, 2017. After that, Fox has claimed release dates of October 6, 2017, January 12, 2018, and July 13, 2018 for productions based on Marvel properties, without revealing which titles are involved.

We know that plans are underway for a sequel to smash hit Deadpool, starring Ryan Reynolds, as well as Gambit, to be played by Channing Tatum. Potentially, however, the biggest title may be The New Mutants, to be directed by Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars). Producer Simon Kinberg has described it as having "more of a YA [young adult] vibe to it," and we've already seen speculation about who might be starring and what characters they might be playing. Now writer-director Boone has dropped further hints via social media about his plans.

Magik / Cannonball / Sunspot

Boone posted images of individual Marvel comic book characters, though without specifically starting they would be included in his movie. Above we can see Magik, a teleporter, rumored to be played by Anya Taylor-Joy from The Witch, Cannonball, a character who can generate energy and release it through his skin, and Sunspot, a mutant who can absorb solar energy and transform it into physical strength.

Wolfsbane

Above is an image he shared of  Wolfsbane, a shape-shifting Scottish werewolf, rumored to be played by Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones), and below is Mirage, a character who can generate astral images in the form of someone's greatest fear or desire.

He also shared an image featuring Mirage, Magik, Wolfsbane and Cannonball.

The New Mutants

As noted by io9, this team is almost identical to the one found in the comic books, with the exception of Magik replacing Karma. For good measure, Boone added one more image of Warlock, a mutant who can shift shapes at will. The character is also known for his comic relief.

We expect to start hearing more official word about The New Mutants, especially once X-Men: Apocalypse opens in theaters later this month.
